The PARAGRAPH ProjectTrinity Design/Build

Like two distinct voices whispering in either ear, historic preservation and green building have always had contrasting agendas. What's new can't be old and what's old can't be new. So they say.

Durham's 209 North Gregson Street is a building that bridges the past to the future — while celebrating the importance of both. It is a beautiful balance of preservation and sustainability.

We're excited to share some of the thinking that went into the building below along with additional images. We hope 209 North Gregson can inspire similar decisions in other buildings throughout our community and beyond.

Much of the wood used in the building is repurposed. Closed cell foam insulation inside the walls is ultra-efficient. Lighting = as many watts as square footage.
Special double-paned glass satisfies both green and preservation goals. A series of monitors facing both North and South provide light without direct exposure. Sorghum board is a rapidly renewable resource.
FLOR carpet uses recycled content. Translated, low VOC paint means better air quality. Original tin ceiling.

RSVP FOR THE OPENING ON 4/4/08.
